TANZANIA BUDGET SAFARI INFO
Why Tanzania budget safari
Offering refuge to all five of Africa’s big game (lions, buffaloes, leopards, elephants, and rhinos), as well as a mix of four of the world’s top tourist destinations, including Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s tallest peak, Serengeti National Park, which hosts the annual wildebeest migration from June to September in search of water and pasture, and Ngorongoro crater, one of the world’s most famous natural wonders, and Zanzibar, a historical destination with a lot to give visitors in terms of beach tours, ancient architecture, and spice plantations, among other things, are both in Kenya.
What a unique country and collection of experiences! Reducing costs while having fun and enjoying the safari experience is our aim, yes it is possible when you follow a few tips shared by our expert teams, right from transportation, accommodation and many more.
Accommodation during Tanzania budget safari
Budget lodgings, such as hotels, lodges, and hostels, are the best choice because they have very traditional amenities, clean water, strong security, and friendly staff ready to assist you. What could cost over $500 on a luxury trip could cost as little as $200 on a budget safari while providing the same level of enjoyment?
Camping is the best choice for your trip because it is the cheapest way of lodging while also bringing you closer to nature. Our team is capable of making your dream come true, so book your safaris in advance to secure the best budget prices.
The following are some of the travel options available to everyone, regardless of their financial situation; it can be a one-day or multi-day safari. Our advice is that the peak season from June-September, prices tend to be high when all the affordable accommodations are occupied; so, the best time is during the low season, December to March when the parks are free and prices are low.
Tanzania budget safari options
Cultural safaris on a budget. The Maasai people, who are herders and hunters, perform a true demonstration of African cultures by dancing while leaping high above the ground and landing to a new rhythm of African sound that leaves your face smiling and your ribs aching with laughter. Furthermore, as part of the kit, they demonstrate some of the hunting equipment, such as spears, bows, and arrows. This is a very fun session of unlimited laughter at a very low cost.
Budget Beach Safaris: When it comes to beach fun along the Indian Ocean’s coastline, Tanzania is unrivaled. Tanzania provides visitors with the most cost-effective way to relax on its white-sand beaches and participate in water-based activities in the Zanzibar archipelago region, all while sampling rare seafood such as Tilapia fish and octopus meat.
The island is well-known for its historical role in the slave trade, as it was the main market where slaves were gathered before being transported to Europe.
Zanzibar’s northern and eastern coasts are known for their fascinating calm beaches, amazing spice plantations, scenic ancient houses, and restorations. The island is amazingly situated a small distance from Dar-es-Salaam.
Tanzania Wildlife safari: Tanzania is known for its diverse biodiversity, with a diverse variety of flora and fauna, birds and marine animals in various destinations, and primates including chimps in Mahale and Gombe Stream national parks.
In the Serengeti, Ngorongoro crater, and elsewhere, there is a large population of notable mammals such as wildebeests, zebras, elephants, antelopes, and buffalos, among others, at very affordable prices. The only annual wildebeest migration in search of pasture and water takes place in Serengeti National Park.
Using a game drive vehicle is the best way to see the various mammals that inhabit the wilderness; however, most of the vehicles charge a flat rate that covers all of the animals. let’s say 30usd for a game drive no matter the number on board, this tells you that though you are more than one person, the cost gets reduced thus effecting your budget.

Highlights of Tanzania Safari & Tour
Serengeti National Park is known as the “Endless Plains.” The Great Migration and wide-open savannah grasslands teeming with wildlife make this region popular. The Serengeti Plains appear to be an infinite sea of classic African landscapes. The Serengeti National Park, Tanzania’s oldest and most famous national park, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The annual Wildebeest Migration is one of the most incredible wildlife spectacles on the planet, with hundreds of thousands to millions of stampeding wildebeest, zebra, Thomson’s gazelle, and other antelopes attracting a slew of predators!
Ngorongoro Crater – Eden’s Garden: This extinct volcano has the highest density of wild animals found in a single region in Africa. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the world’s largest unflooded caldera, is one of the best places to see predators, especially lions.
Zanzibar Islands, also known as the Spice Islands: An idyllic beach paradise where Arabic and African influences collide to form an enthralling cultural and historical journey. Along the coasts of its tropical islands, Zanzibar has some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling spots in the world.
Tarangire National Park is a less-visited wildlife haven: Tarangire is best known for its large elephant population and tree-climbing lions, but it also has a diverse bird population. Tarangire Park’s distinctive landscape is enhanced by the presence of baobab trees and termite mounds. Tarangire is said to have one of the largest concentrations of elephants per square kilometer in the world. During the dry season, Tarangire has Tanzania’s second-highest concentration of wildlife.
Lake Manyara National Park is home to Africa’s most beautiful lake. This national park contains a wide range of ecosystems that host a wide range of wildlife. The shallow Lake Manyara attracts large flocks of flamingos and other birds, as well as tree-climbing lions and a variety of other wild animals.
Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s Roof: Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak and the world’s highest free-standing mountain, is one of the world’s seven summits.
Safari Circuit in Southern Tanzania: Tanzania’s Southern Safari Circuit consists of the Mikumi National Park, Ruaha National Park, Selous Game Reserve, and Udzungwa Mountains National Park.
Mikumi National Park, which covers 3230 km2 of open savannahs resembling the Serengeti Plains, is the nearest national park to Dar es Salaam. Mikumi is home to over 400 bird species, predators such as leopards and lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, greater Kudu and wildebeest, and antelopes.
Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s second-largest National Park, is a relatively wild and less explored wilderness area. The park is located in a transitional zone between Southern and East African flora and fauna, and it contains a diverse range of mammals, birds, and plants. Ruaha is famous for its massive elephant and buffalo herds, as well as its lion, leopard, and cheetah populations.
The small and less touristy Selous Reserve is Africa’s largest game reserve and home to one of the world’s highest concentrations of big game. This untamed wilderness area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is home to one of Africa’s largest populations of endangered African Wild Dogs, as well as critically endangered black rhinos.
The Udzungwa Mountains National Park is not a typical game viewing destination, but it is a World Biodiversity Hotspot that is home to many endangered plant and animal species. This pristine and one-of-a-kind park spans a mountainous area with lush rainforests and is breathtakingly beautiful. Because of their high biodiversity and species endemism, the Udzungwa Mountains are often referred to as the Galapagos Islands of Africa.
Why should I choose Tanzania for a budget safari?
Tanzania is an excellent choice for budget safaris because it offers inexpensive camping as well as low-cost lodging outside of most parks (not Serengeti National Park).
There are numerous tour operators that sell low-cost safaris, so shop around for the best price. Aside from private safaris, shared group tours are also common and can help you save even more money.
What is included in a Tanzania budget safari?
Most of the costs of a Tanzania budget safari package will be included in the quoted amount. All road transportation between parks, game drives, guides, and park fees are included. Meals on camping safaris should be included in the bill, and are typically prepared by a chef who travels with the safari. Tea, coffee, and probably drinking water are included in meals. Such beverages, such as soft drinks and alcohol, are not included.
Since these can be costly on safari, it’s a good idea to stock up before you leave Arusha (the starting point for most budget safaris). Tips are also not included, which can easily add up in Tanzania.
How do I avoid the crowds on a Tanzania budget safari?
This can be challenging. In the Serengeti, for example, safari drivers with radios can be found on the roads within a 5–10km/3–6mi radius of park headquarters and public campsites at Seronera. As a result, worthwhile sightings draw vehicles in a matter of minutes. You could have a lion or cheetah sighting all to yourself if you venture a little further afield.
In both parks, roads are busiest between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. in the morning and 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. in the afternoon. Instead of eating breakfast at camp, prepare food ahead of time and leave before the crowds arrive. Traveling out of season is another choice. The wettest months on the northern circuit are April to June.
Can you describe a typical day on a Tanzania budget safari?
Getting up before sunrise and grabbing a fast cup of coffee or tea is the usual routine. Then you go on a game drive early in the morning and return to camp for a late breakfast or lunch. Afternoon game drives begin at 3 or 4 p.m. and last until the sun sets. On days when you move between camps, your routine can change.
In any case, the day normally concludes with a few beers around the campfire, a simple bush dinner prepared by your chef, and an early night in preparation for a sunrise start.
The first two and last two hours of daylight are normally reserved for game drives. The best time to see tigers, leopards, and other animals on the move is during the cooler hours of the day. These are also the best light for photography.
What type of accommodation can I expect on a Tanzania budget safari?
A budget Tanzania safari normally entails a camping trip. Camping is the only choice in most parks if you want to keep your travel costs down.
Budget safaris to Tanzania’s northern circuit usually provide camping or a mix of camping and budget lodges and hotels outside of the park. Small private campsites can be found in villages bordering national parks and reserves, such as Mto wa Mbu (outside Lake Manyara National Park) or Karatu (outside Lake Manyara National Park) (outside Ngorongoro Conservation Area).
These private campgrounds are the cheapest and provide the finest amenities, yet they appear to be in inconvenient suburban areas and, in certain instances, are extremely crowded.
What are the typical costs of a budget safari inTanzania?
Tanzania’s most affordable budget safari packages start at about US$200 to US$250 per person per day. Owing to high park fees and the costs of operating in remote areas only accessible by durable 4x4s, this is the case.
If you want to get the full bush experience, it’s usually worth spending a little more to camp within national parks rather than in villages outside of them. The Serengeti and northern safari circuit are the subject of most safaris departing from Arusha. However, camping safari packages departing from Dar es Salaam to the lesser-known Mikumi National Park and the extensive Selous Game Reserve are less expensive.
