Nyakasura Cave/Amabere Caves
The Amabere Caves (also known as Nyakasura Caves) are a popular tourist attraction in Uganda. They are located at Nyakasura Falls, approximately 9 kilometers from the town of Fort Portal.
After all, this isn’t simply a cave; there’s a tale to be told about it – the more the reason it fits as hidden gems in Uganda.
History reads that Nyinamwiru, the daughter of a local monarch who purportedly had her breasts cut off in order to make her less appealing to males, gave birth to the name Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru, which translates as “Breasts of Nyinamwiru.”
When this very harsh strategy failed, the king of Toro, Bukuku of Toro, took her into a cave and hid her there. This was for the rest of her life. Her fascination, on the other hand, is still very powerful.
The king was so annoyed that he ordered that her breasts be cut off as a punishment for her disobedience so that she would never get married or nurse children. Her breasts were then thrown in the caves and so these caves are believed to be Nyinamwiru’s breasts oozing milk from the day they were cut. The caves have stalactites and stalagmites that are in shape of women’s breasts.
Whilst there you can stand behind the waterfall which is a great experience and even swim in the small pool itself though its icy cold and you may end up surrounded by colobus monkeys!
Given recent publicity the entrance fees to the “cave” have recently risen sharply and non-locals also pay a premium. All of thirty minutes’ walk, but the guide will enthuse you with ancient folklore to make the cost worthwhile! There is also a nearby campsite.

The huge falls dictate the moisture content of the atmosphere surrounding the caves. At the entrance to the caves, the snake size slippery path guides you through as you penetrate into a cool green world of moss and fern covered by trees and rocks.
